#Branding tip for #studentsoflinkedin ! When you’re studying, and/if you have had no experience in the industry you are studying towards, it makes sense to label yourself as a student, e.g: 2nd Year Marketing Student. But once you have graduated 👩🏼🎓👨🎓 your approach HAS to change! Once you are actively #jobsearching, your student label becomes a detriment. You need to emphasise experience and your potential value. This potential can be overlooked as a #freshgrad. If you want to get traction in the job market, you need to STOP calling yourself a #graduate on your profile! This achieves only two things...
1. It makes you looks green, fuelling an assumption that you come without any work experience or work skills.
2. It stops anyone from knowing what you want/are capable of!
Granted, if your degree is very focused, LI users might assume you want a job in x field, but this is still poor branding! I could cry at the number of times I see 'English Literature Graduate - First Class'. That's great and everything, but... are *you* a degree? Sounds a bit like it!
What do you want to DO with that degree and experience? What's next? I do not know what you are aiming for... and neither does anyone else on LinkedIn. Personal branding is KEY to success when you are starting out. #Brand yourself for what you want... because approx 70% of employers look at LI before interviewing and you need to show your value. So don’t call yourself a graduate... try something like: Marketing Assistant | First Class Hons Marketing Degree... or... Marketing Intern | 1st Class Hons Degree Graduate. Aim for what you want and are capable of... and that is how you will get opportunities.
